Development of cross-modal processing.

چکیده
The ability to process and integrate cross-modal input is important for many everyday tasks. The current paper reviews theoretical and empirical work examining cross-modal processing with a focus on recent findings examining infants' and children's processing of arbitrary auditory-visual pairings. The current paper puts forward a potential mechanism that may account for modality dominance effects found in a variety of cognitive tasks. The mechanism assumes that although early processing of auditory and visual input is parallel, attention is allocated in a serial manner with the modality that is faster to engage attention dominating later processing. Details of the mechanism, factors influencing processing of arbitrary auditory-visual pairings, and implications for higher-order tasks are discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Neonatal Restriction of Tactile Inputs Leads to Long-Lasting Impairments of Cross-Modal Processing.
Optimal behavior relies on the combination of inputs from multiple senses through complex interactions within neocortical networks. The ontogeny of this multisensory interplay is still unknown. Here, we identify critical factors that control the development of visual-tactile processing by combining in vivo electrophysiology with anatomical/functional assessment of cortico-cortical communication...
متن کاملFEM Updating for Offshore Jacket Structures Using Measured Incomplete Modal Data
Marine industry requires continued development of new technologies in order to produce oil. An essential requirement in design is to be able to compare experimental data from prototype structures with predicted information from a corresponding analytical finite element model. In this study, structural model updating may be defined as the fit of an existing analytical model in the light of measu...
متن کاملUnilateral deafness in children affects development of multi-modal modulation and default mode networks
Monaural auditory input due to congenital or acquired unilateral hearing loss (UHL) may have neurobiological effects on the developing brain. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated the effect of UHL on the development of functional brain networks used for cross-modal processing. Children ages 7-12 with moderate or greater unilateral hearing loss of sensorineural ori...
متن کاملTreatment of sentence comprehension and production in aphasia: is there cross-modal generalisation?
Exploring generalisation following treatment of language deficits in aphasia can provide insights into the functional relation of the cognitive processing systems involved. In the present study, we first review treatment outcomes of interventions targeting sentence processing deficits and, second report a treatment study examining the occurrence of practice effects and generalisation in sentenc...
متن کاملThe effect of bottom-up and top-down auditory program training on the development of children's auditory processing skills
Although there have been several previous investigations on the role of auditory training for the development of auditory processing skills, it still remains unknown whether children with auditory processing difficulties can get improved auditory skills after exposure to a multi-modal training experience comprising both visual and tactile stimuli. The present study, therefore, attempted to use ...
